Finding Niche Ideas – Overcoming Our Current Mindset
Finding niche ideas can be quite a tough prospect when you are just starting out. The problem is that we humans are very set in our ways, and we tend to want to stay with “what we know”. This forces us into particular mindsets and we sometimes battle to think laterally. Often, all it takes a little “prodding” to get the creativity going.
This post can be read in conjunction with the series that Kev is currently writing on niche marketing. Its purpose is to give you some good spots to look for profitable new niche ideas. My focus for this post is primarily on tangible products that you may want to build-out into an eBay store, or an Amazon store, for example.
eBay used to have a section called “What’s Hot”, that they have now renamed into eBay Pulse. It’s basically a “by category” breakdown of the most searched for terms on eBay and it is updated daily.
Shopping.com is one of the largest “comparison” shopping networks on the Internet. They have a very handy section, called their “Consumer Demand Index”, that does a breakdown of their most searched for keywords, on a “per category” basis. They update this every 2 weeks.
Formerly known as “Froogle”, and now re-branded as Google Product Search, this is a very handy list of keywords that consumers are searching for on the Google shopping network. Each time that you refresh this page in your browser, you will be presented with the 25 most recent searches. Do it a couple of times and you will start seeing some trends emerge for commonly requested items.
Amazon offers a similar type thing as eBay, where you can see the most popular selling items in a variety of categories. This information is updated hourly.
This is a good spot to have a look at if you are into the “techie” type consumer electronics niches. Cool new gadgets, new phones, etc. that you may be able to get a head-start on.
Google Labs provides a page where they aggregate the current most searched for keywords going through their search engine. It is updated on a daily basis. This is an ideal spot to check for emerging trends as they are starting. You can also grab a widget from this page that will drop these top searches into your RSS reader.
Shop.com is another massive comparison site that offers up information on its most searched for keywords. If you click the link above you will go to their main category page, and each category is a link to the most popular searches in that category. On their main homepage, at the bottom left hand side, you also get a short list of their current popular items.
PriceGrabber.com is yet another of the huge comparison shopping sites. The link above will take you to their daily updated list of the top 200 selling products on their site.
There are hundreds of other places for you to get some good niche ideas, these I have mentioned are some of the ones that I personally use.
We are creatures of habit and we learn by repetition, so you must get into the habit of keeping your eyes open, wherever you are, for new niche ideas. For example, when I drive around in my car I habitually look at all the adverts on the delivery vehicles that I pass. You will be amazed how quick you start spotting new things that you would never previously have thought of. Keep a book in your car and get your wife/passenger to write them down.
Train your brain, and everywhere you look you will start finding profitable new niche ideas.
